Focusing on preparing schools to respond to the unthinkable this two-day workshop will cover topics such as:

A viable school safety contact for more than 21 years, the Center provides professional training services for conferences, seminars and workshops. Recent additions to NSSC's staff and training affiliates have expanded its capacity to deliver theme-specific trainings, technical assistance and services regarding a variety of current school safety challenges. Among such topics are bully prevention, hate crime prevention, diversity issues, student developmental issues, classroom management, and crisis response and recovery. Since September 1999, the National School Safety Center has been working closely with US Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services to design and deliver the nation's premiere school/law enforcement training program. The Center assembled school safety and security experts from across the nation along with its own cadre of expert trainers to design a cutting-edge school safety training curriculum to meet the needs of school site administrators and their assigned school resource officers.

NSSC regularly gathers its training cadre to deliver regional training workshops based on this curriculum to school and law enforcement teams associated with the COPS in Schools (CIS) Initiative. To date, the Center has trained more than 9,000 educators and officers in partnership building, collaboration, safe school planning and problem solving. The Center has also made available its technical assistance, helping CIS participants bridge from school safety theory to actual practice in their schools and jurisdictions.

Ronald D. Stephens, Ed. D., Senior Training Associate

Dr. Ronald D. Stephens currently serves as Executive Director of the National School Safety Center. His past experience includes service as a teacher, assistant superintendent, and school board member.

Dr. Stephens is available for keynote speaking on most all school safety topics. He has spoken at hundreds of conferences across the nation and appeared on all of the major television networks as a school safety expert. He has also published numerous books and articles on the topic of school safety.

Dr. Stephens is recognized as an expert witness in numerous state courts and jurisdictions throughout the United States. He is available to assist school districts, administrators, law enforcement agencies and crime victims in matters relating to school safety.

In addition, Dr. Stephens has conducted more than 1,000 school security and safety site assessments throughout the United States. Each assessment includes a review of the school's safety related policies, crime prevention through environmental design, meetings with key personnel, walk-through of the school and report outlining potential safety problems and promising practices for creating a safer school. Site assessments are available for individual school sites or entire school districts.

Hilda Clarice Quiroz currently serves as a program developer, keynote presenter, and author for the National School Safety Center. Ms. Quiroz presents at local, regional and national levels. She has written numerous books, articles, pamphlets, and training designs about bullying, hate-bias crimes, school safety, health education, team building, and cultural issues. Having experience in both public school and community settings, she serves as a consultant trainer for schools, communities, law enforcement agencies, and health professionals. She is a master trainer for the California Department of Education. Her current efforts also include the training of school resource officers and school administrators associated with the federal COPS in Schools Initiative, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Michael G. Rivas, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at California State University, Northridge. He also serves as a Senior Training Associate for NSSC. He brings 20 plus years of educational experience in both the public and private sectors as a classroom teacher, coach, athletic director, college professor and adult educator. His most recent work at the Center has been with adult education providing in-service instruction and enrichment to teams of school resources officers and school administrators. He has also trained pre-service teachers through the teacher education program at Pepperdine University.

Bernard James is Professor of Constitutional Law at Pepperdine University, teaching courses in Federalism, Individual Rights, First Amendment, Education Law and State Constitutional Law. Dr. James specializes in constitutional matters, serving as the First Amendment Contributing Editor on the ABA Preview Journal. He also writes for the National Law Journal. He lectures in America and Canada on legal issues and serves as a constitutional law commentator for the national and local media. Dr. James serves as a senior consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice where he co-authored Sharing Information: A Guide to FERPA and Participation in Juvenile Justice Programs. He has authored and taught the legal curriculum for the USDOJ COPS in Schools Program. He served for 18 years as Special Counsel to the National School Safety Center, and now serves as an advisor and training consultant.

Dr. Pamela L. Riley is the Executive Director of the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE). Dr. Riley was the Executive Director of the Center for the Prevention of School Violence from its establishment in 1993 until joining SAVE in late 2000. She was also a high school principal and teacher. She currently serves as the Associate Editor of the Journal on School Violence and as the Violence-Free section editor for the Guidance Channel's monthly EZine. She is a frequent speaker at US Department of Justice conferences. She has received numerous school violence prevention awards from education and law. Dr. Riley is viewed as a national expert on school violence prevention and serves as an advisor and trainer consultant for the National School Safety Center.

Dr. Marleen Wong is Director of as Director of Crisis Counseling and Intervention for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She also serves as the Director and Principal Investigator for the Trauma Services Adaptation Center for Schools as part of the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative of the US Department of Health and Human Services. She organized mental health recovery programs after many of the tragic school shootings and the terrorist attacks in Oklahoma City, New York, and Washington, D.C., and trained school staffs on the effects of psychological trauma on children after natural disasters and incidents of civil unrest. Her most recent work for the Department of Education is in states most affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Ms. Wong also serves as an advisor and consultant trainer for the National School Safety Center.

Walter Bouman is a veteran Training Sergeant from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. During his 33-year law enforcement career, he worked as a field deputy, academy instructor, special weapons teams, investigations and terrorism, and as a liaison deputy to schools. He is an international trainer consultant in areas of terrorism, emergency response, hate/bias crime prevention and investigation, school safety issues, anti-bullying and hate behavior, and terrorism in schools. Mr. Bouman serves as a Master Instructor with the Peace Officers Standard of Training Program (POST), and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice for California State University, San Bernardino. He currently serves as an advisor and trainer consultant for the National School Safety Center.

Michael Campo currently serves as a Police Liaison Detective/SRO at Hinsdale South High School in Darien, IL, having been in the field of law enforcement for 21 years. He also serves as a Gang Specialist, a member of the Dupage County Anti-Gang Task Force, and a Tactical Self-Defense Coordinator/Trainer. Detective Campo is a certified Juvenile Officer and holds an advanced level of certification from the National Association of School Resource Officers. As an SRO, he investigates criminal activity, serves as a youth counselor, works with parents and other police agencies, and is part of the high school’s administrative team. Detective Campo helped develop and remains actively involved in a peer jury program that includes seven different municipalities and five area high schools. He also serves as an advisor and training consultant for the National School Safety Center.

Jarado J. Blue is currently the President of JBlue Consulting, providing training and consulting services in areas related to school crisis prevention and response, school security, safe school planning and school/law enforcement partnerships. Previously, he served as the Chief of Police for the Pasadena Unified School District. In that position, Chief Blue reorganized the security department, reduced incident rates of violent crimes on campus, reduced vandalism by 35 percent over a two-year period, and created a bicycle patrol and a K-6 safety program. Prior to becoming chief, he was a police officer and school resource officer for the City of Pasadena. Chief Blue holds a Master of Science degree from Pacific Western University and a Bachelor of Science from California State University at Los Angeles. He has taught in both community college and high school settings.

Blue currently trains teams of school resource officers and school administrators associated with the federal COPS in Schools Initiative, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. He also trains with NSSC's School Safety Leadership Training Program and serves in an advisory capacity to the US Department of Education's Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program.

Dr. Bob McGlenn is both a clinical and school psychologist. He has worked as a school psychologist at both the elementary and secondary levels, trained and supervised doctoral level interns at area psychiatric hospitals and community based clinics, and consulted with a residential treatment center for severely disturbed adolescents.

Dr. McGlenn designed and directed the implementation of the crisis response plan to the Santana and Granite Hills High School shootings in March 2001. He served as Coordinator of the Santana Recovery Project, which provided services and treatment to those traumatized by the event. Since the incident he has spoken to numerous groups concerning school safety, treatment, and violence prevention and has worked for the National School Safety Center as a trainer for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program and as a consultant to the Department of Homeland Security. In addition, Dr. McGlenn gives presentations on "The Keys to Successful Parenting" and "How to Win at the Card Game of Life."
